Our Story

Turning laser science into chemical intelligence

Applied Spectra was founded on a simple idea: advanced science should make chemical analysis faster, cleaner, and more useful.

For more than two decades, we have advanced laser-based analytical technologies that enable scientists, engineers, and manufacturers to understand the chemistry of materials directly—with minimal sample preparation and exceptional spatial insight.

From our roots in laser ablation (LA) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to today's integrated elemental, isotopic, and chemical imaging technologies, our focus has remained the same: turning advances in laser science into practical solutions for real analytical challenges.

Science, Engineering & Partnership

Our technology is only part of the story.

At Applied Spectra, customers gain more than an analytical instrument. They gain access to scientists, engineers, and application specialists with deep experience in laser–material interaction, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and analytical method development.

We work alongside researchers and manufacturers to move from an analytical question to meaningful chemical information—and from that information to better understanding, processes, and decisions.

From Scientific Discovery to Pioneering Innovation

Two decades of laser science, commercialized.

Applied Spectra was founded in 2004 by Dr. Richard E. Russo, following nearly three decades of pioneering research in laser ablation and LIBS at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dr. Russo recognized that advances in laser science could move beyond the research laboratory and transform how materials are chemically analyzed. Applied Spectra was created to turn that scientific foundation into robust analytical technologies capable of solving real-world problems.

Our innovation journey began with the introduction of the RT100 in 2007, ASI's first commercial LIBS instrument. In 2009, we developed a pioneering femtosecond laser ablation system based on ytterbium (Yb) diode-pumped laser technology, advancing ultrafast laser sampling for chemical analysis.

In 2012, ASI introduced a landmark innovation: our patented Tandem LA–LIBS technology, combining the complementary capabilities of LIBS and LA-ICP-MS within the same laser sampling event. This breakthrough enabled more comprehensive chemical information by bringing together optical emission and mass spectrometric analysis.

Building on these innovations, our LIBS and LA product families have continued to evolve through successive advances in laser technology, analytical performance, automation, and software—now reaching their fifth generation of product development.

Advancing the Materials That Shape Our Future

What materials contain, where, and how it changes.

As materials become more complex, understanding what they contain, where their chemistry is located, and how that chemistry changes is increasingly important. Applied Spectra technologies are helping researchers and manufacturers address challenges across:

  • Battery materials and manufacturing
  • Critical materials and mining
  • Nuclear energy and materials
  • Geoscience
  • Semiconductor and advanced materials
  • Analytical research

Across these fields, the objective is the same: provide chemical information that helps customers accelerate discovery, understand materials, solve problems, and improve processes.

What Drives Us

Meeting the challenge of material chemistry.

The technologies shaping the future—from advanced batteries and critical-material supply chains to next-generation nuclear energy and engineered materials—depend on increasingly sophisticated control of material chemistry.

Applied Spectra brings together laser science, analytical expertise, practical engineering, and close customer collaboration to meet that challenge.

We turn complex chemistry into actionable insight—helping our customers discover, develop, and manufacture what comes next.
